Portuguese or Portugees is the sixth most spoken language in the world and the third most spoken European language. Nearly 135 million people speak Portuguese, which is the official language of eight countries, comprising the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP). Portuguese is a gateway to culture, travel and business on four continents. Portugal has a rich history and heritage as can be seen in its architecture. Portuguese wine, food and music are world famous and need no introduction. The Portuguese are also famous for their hospitality. Brazilians have a love of life apparent in Samba and Carnival. There is much to discover about Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries. Second most spoken Romance language in Africa, Mainland Southeast Asia (after French) and the most spoken romance language in East and South Asia. While in Maritime Southeast Asia, as in South America, the numbers compete with those of Spanish.
